Shark Week on the Discovery channel may be next week but we've had
several sharks in local waters recently. There was a report of a
Striped Bass bitten in half last week and several local charter boats have
done well fishing for Makos, Threshers and Blue sharks off of
Nantucket. The prize of the shark family has arrived in Nantucket
waters recently. Yesterday seven Great White Sharks were spotted off of
Chatham and 1 was tagged for research. Closer to home a local charter
captain spotted an 18ft Great White- 3 miles off of Great Point. While
this is nerve wracking for many swimmers, there has not been a shark
attack in Massachusetts waters for over 70 years and our waters have
been littered with these awesome creatures. Before screaming "shark"
at the beach though, know that 99% of shark spottings while at the
beach are harmless Oceanic Sunfish that only feed on plankton and
Jellyfish.
