Madequecham (“Mad-uh-ka-sham”) Once voted the “Best Secluded Beach” by Boston Magazine, if you make the trek out, you are sure to agree. Also known as Madequecham Valley, this is the perfect place to recharge and reconnect with Nantucket’s natural beauty and charm. Situated between Tom Nevers and Nobadeer, there are fewer tourists in this part of the island due to the potential difficulty of dirt road access. While tourists in this location might be lacking compared to the rest of the island, wildlife certainly is not. Scrub oak, foliage, and untouched habitat are abundant, laying grounds and making this a popular hangout destination for a considerable part of Nantucket's vast deer population. If you are looking for a low-key, restful island vacation, right next to Nantucket’s most pristine surf spots, it doesn’t get much better than this hidden gem. Located along the southeastern shore, this unique destination is accessible by a long, winding dirt road.

Madequecham Valley is a compilation of 28 different parcels making up nearly 2,150 acres abutting Tom Nevers. This area formed over 10,000 years ago when water from the last glacier created a network of small rivers that flowed into the ocean. Once melted, the glacier eventually left behind the outwash valley of Madequecham, which we now know and love for its extensive oceanic views, open and protected spaces, and serene ambiance. An excellent place for a golden hour or morning walk, or a bike ride with friends, check out Madequecham Valley if you are searching for a peaceful island area to learn and explore.

Madequecham Beach The waves and currents along the island’s south side make this coastline ideal for strong swimmers and surfers. Miles of quiet, uninterrupted beach make for a beautifully secluded seaside day. A must-visit area if you're a fan of playing in the waves, escaping from the crowds, and surfing. One of the most picturesque seaside stretches, snap a photo from the cliff to capture one of our favorite Nantucket views. A prominent spot for an afternoon of fishing, a sunset walk with your pup, a private picnic, and much more, Madequecham offers it all. Before heading that way for the day, please be aware that parking is very limited, there are no lifeguards or restrooms, and the beach is not easily accessible by bike path. Get ready for an adventure!

Great Pointer: If you find yourself on the island when it's windy and the swells pick up, make sure to head out to Madequecham Beach to check out some of the island's best surfers in action. When the waves are big, this popular surf spot typically draws a large crowd of experienced surfers to the water and observers and photographers along the dunes to catch the wave riders in action!
