Nantucket Island is a gem of natural beauty, and a significant portion of this island paradise is preserved through the efforts of various conservation organizations. Here's a closer look at the impressive work done to protect and maintain the island’s ecological balance:
Nantucket Conservation Foundation
The Nantucket Conservation Foundation plays a vital role in preserving the island's natural habitat. They own and maintain an extensive 9,010 acres, accounting for nearly one-third of Nantucket. This land is divided into 218 distinct parcels. The largest of these is the 3,200-acre Middle Moors, while the smallest is a mere tenth of an acre at Larsen Park.
Nantucket Land Bank
The Nantucket Land Bank is another significant player, managing 3,496 acres dedicated to conservation, recreation, and agriculture. This includes 51 miles of public trails, 1.9 miles of beach, and 77.5 acres used for agricultural endeavors.
Trustees of Reservations
The Trustees of Reservations manage the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Reservation, which spans 1,117 acres. This area is a sanctuary for various wildlife and offers a glimpse into Nantucket’s pristine natural environment.
Mass Audubon
Mass Audubon oversees 872 acres across several sites, including the Sesachacha Heathlands Wildlife Sanctuary with 5 miles of trails, the Lost Farm Wildlife Sanctuary with 75 acres and 5 miles of trails, and the 17-acre Smith’s Point Wildlife Sanctuary. These areas provide critical habitats for wildlife and recreational opportunities for visitors.
Linda Loring Nature Foundation
This foundation owns and manages 275 acres of trust land, including 1.5 miles of public trails. Their efforts focus on preserving the land for both ecological and educational purposes.
The ’Sconset Trust
The ’Sconset Trust is responsible for 149+ acres in and around the charming ’Sconset Village, which includes the iconic Sankaty Head Lighthouse and Ruddick Commons. Their work ensures that this historic and scenic part of the island remains unspoiled.
The Madaket Land Trust
In the western part of the island, the Madaket Land Trust acquires, maintains, and preserves 73 acres of land. This trust works to protect the natural beauty and public access to this cherished area.
Total Conservation Efforts
Altogether, these organizations have secured approximately 15,084 acres of land for conservation on Nantucket. This collective effort ensures that the island's natural beauty and ecological integrity are preserved for generations to come.
