53 Center Street
Here is an opportunity to own a true piece of Nantucket history. This Greek revival home was built by ship's captain David N Edwards circa 1840. A successful whale ship captain of four voyages between 1825 and 1841, Captain Edwards commanded such ships as the Paragon, the Harvest, the Montano, and the Nantucket. Clearly, his home is evidence of his success. The main floor consists of a formal living room, a study, a media room, a very large dining room, a modern kitchen with sitting and breakfast areas, a large butler's pantry, and a half bath. The living room, study and dining room each have a fireplace. The ceilings are exceptionally high throughout. At the top of the main staircase is a landing that is grand enough to serve as a third living area. Here, there are three bedrooms in addition to the master suite. The master is yet another living area. It is composed of three rooms; a sitting / exercise room with fireplace, a large bathroom with soaking tub and shower, and at the back, an impressive vaulted bedroom with three walls of windows and sitting area. There are views of the harbor. On the third floor is a large open bedroom with full bath. All this can be closed off from the rest of the house. Here you will find the sturdy ladder up to the cupola. Studio cottage with full bath which makes property function like a seven bedroom.
First Floor A formal entry foyer opens to the main living area at the left with large 6/6 windows offering a southwest exposure and a view of the Congregational church. Adjoining this space is a smaller sitting room also with a view out to Center Street. Each room has a fireplace. Moving to the right of the entry is the main staircase and a snug media room with sliding doors to close it off from the rest of the home. Further along toward the back of the home is the very large formal dining room. Views are to the southeast. This room also features a fireplace. At the northeast end of the home is the large, modern kitchen. There are marble counter surfaces, a stylish stainless farmhouse sink, a six-burner Wolf range, and dual dishwashers. Additionally, there is a cozy seating area and breakfast table. Entertaining is a clear focus here since adjoining the kitchen is a galley style butlers pantry with dishwasher, lots of storage, and access through double doors to the dining room. All the ceilings on this level are exceptionally high. The amount of natural light here almost precludes the need for artificial light during the day.
Second Floor At the head of the second floor staircase is a large space that occupies the core of the home. It is the focus from which you can access all the second floor bedrooms. Straight ahead is the large bedroom that overlooks Center Street and the church. It is pleasant and sunny. From this room you can access the corner bedroom with an en suite full bath. The third bedroom at this end of the house is accessible from the en suite bedroom or the upper landing. Here there is a fireplace. The master suite is composed of three rooms; a large sitting room with fireplace, laundry, and storage, the master bath with soaking tub, dual vanities and shower, and the spectacular bedroom with three walls of windows overlooking the harbor. This is truly a magnificent space; so much light, an incredible view, vaulted ceiling, sitting area...no reason to leave. Once again, the ceiling height is exceptional.
Third Floor The third floor is a large open space occupying the eves of the house. Tall ceilings at the apex of the room that gradually slope downward to the perimeter create a room with a great deal of floor space. Dormer windows bring in abundant light. There is a spacious full bath with a view to the harbor. From here is access via a sturdy ship's ladder to the cupola. Four walls of windows give you an exceptional view. Captain Edward's wife surely looked out from here awaiting his return.
Lower Level Large basement with interior and exterior access.
Other Structures At the rear of the property is a studio with two spacious rooms and a full bath.
