Fall Festivities

10/11/2023

You know fall is around the corner when the air starts to feel crisper and the island quieter. While we look back on the warmer days of summer, we welcome fall to the island for all it has to offer. Summer may be over, but there is still plenty of fun to be had. Fall is the perfect time of year on Nantucket to still enjoy good weather, restaurants, and island adventures without the hustle and bustle of the busy summer crowds. If you’re still considering a Nantucket getaway in September or October, we’ve outlined a few of our fall favorites below.

  • Pick your own tomatoes at Bartlett's Farm

You’ll find Bartlett's Farm tomatoes are listed on many restaurant menus across the island and it’s for good reason! Check out their website so you don’t miss the chance to pick your own. (You'll be back at the farm for pumpkins before you know it!)

  • Cross Island Hike

Put on your walking shoes on September 23rd for the 4th annual Cross Island Hike! Plan in advance what segment of the hike you wish to take part in or take on all 21.6 miles!

  • Celebrate Fall Restaurant Week by dining around the town

The wait for restaurant reservations is finally over! Dine at all of the restaurants you didn’t get around to this summer as many island favorites stay open into the fall months. Check out our Restaurant Blog for some GPP secret dining tips.

  • Fishing

Many locals on the island find fall to be the best time for fishing. Head out on a boat, cast a line off the beach, or drive out to Great Point. The Nantucket Inshore Classic fishing competition runs from September 10th to October 15th.

  • Pick up fresh fall vegetables from local farmers

Support local farmers and their delicious produce by stopping at one of the many great businesses on the island: Moors End Farm, Pumpkin Pond Farm, and Fog Town Farm.

  • Bike around the island

Stick to the bike paths and bike from one end of the island to the other, or enjoy a more scenic route through the many trials. We suggest biking (or walking) around Sandford Farm or the Madaket Moors.

  • Shopping

Many of your favorite stores stay open beyond the summer season and usually have great sales and deals. Use the Chamber of Commerce Cobblestones & Cranberries event as an excuse to shop till you drop! (October 6th-9th)

  • Scalloping Season

Fresh Nantucket scallops are one thing that excites us about the fall! Mark your calendar for October 1st, the official start of the recreational season. If you’re new to scalloping, be sure to read up on some information here.

  • The Nantucket Project

Since 2011, The Nantucket Project has become a favored event of Columbus Weekend. Sit among the thought-provoking conversations under the White Elephant tents just past our office. Learn more about the four-day event here.

  • Nantucket Half Marathon

The 12th Annual Nantucket Half Marathon will take place this year on October 8th. If you’re a runner you will want to experience this beautiful route or simply cheer on the others!

  • Levitate Flannel Jam at Cisco Brewery

Brought to you by Levitate (shop the store on Straight Wharf), is a celebration of fall! Featured is live music, art, drinks, and of course, flannels. Hurry and get your tickets here.

  • Golfing

You can always count on good golfing here and there’s nothing better than a gorgeous fall day on the course. Head over to Miacomet Golf Course (where you can enjoy lunch or dinner after) or Skinners - two local favorites.
